Heather Tobias

Having worked as an actress all my life, it is not surprising that I am drawn to people and the human condition. The past influences my work. I tend to explore groups of characters and their interaction. My enquiry can lead me to Elizabethan Courtiers, Reading jail Prisoners or Egon Schiele’s Women. I then create people who might appear historical in their reference but are in essence of our time.

In my practice I like to experiment by using different mediums. However, I am always drawn back to ceramics, in Sculptural forms or porcelain tiles that I have made. I use underglazes and oxides to create texture and colour and paint onto the form. The real magic occurs in the kiln when these glazes fuse together to create unexpected results for better or worse. I always open my kiln hoping the Kiln Gods have been kind.
